Introducing The Romero Family

Stories & Spotlights
Community Spotlight

The families of Pine Springs Preparatory Virtual Academy (PSPVA) are the heart of what makes our school community so unique and diverse. We’re excited to introduce the Romero’s – a dedicated military family who have experienced firsthand the positive impact virtual education can have.

Military Life

Abelino Romero has proudly served in the military for 14 years, during which the blended family of seven has moved across the country. With frequent relocations, extended deployments, and living far from extended family, they’ve learned to rely on one another for strength and support. Together, Abelino and Krystal – along with their five children, including a set of twins with autism – have faced the challenges of military life with resilience.

Settling into Virtual Education

The Romeros initially enrolled the twins in a traditional public school, but soon encountered difficulties with communication, accommodations, and were unable to fully support the twins’ unique needs. After learning about PSPVA, they decided to transition to a virtual learning environment and haven’t looked back.

They quickly found PSPVA to be a more supportive and responsive experience. Small group instruction, consistent communication with teachers, and the school’s ability to promptly address concerns have made a difference in their education journey.

“It is amazing. If we email the teacher, she responds almost immediately—or even calls us. Quick communication makes it so much easier to work through a problem with the boys. It has made all the difference,” said Abelino.

Specialized Services for Special Children

Through individualized education plans (IEPs), the twins receive tailored support at PSPVA, including speech therapy, occupational therapy, and small group instruction. The Romeros have been thrilled with the school’s hands-on approach.

“That’s something we really love and were worried about – the social aspect of virtual school. The teachers engage each student and keep them involved in the conversation. The boys love it when their name is called and they feel included,” said Krystal.

As a designated Purple Star School, Pine Springs Preparatory Virtual Academy is proud to support our military-connected students and their families. We are honored to be able to meet the needs of families like the Romeros with specialized support and a sense of community no matter where military life may take them.
